Road Tax 2026: How It’s Calculated (Teli Kikloforias)

When the Platform Opens & Key Deadlines

The online platform for paying the 2026 road tax is now open. This year, there have been changes in how the tax is calculated, so it’s important to review the new rules in advance. The payment deadline is December 31, 2025. All the details can be found below in the article.

Road tax is one of the most significant annual expenses for car owners, especially for older models where the cost can reach several hundred euros. For this reason, many drivers choose to surrender their license plates instead of paying the fee.

How Is Road Tax Calculated?

Road tax in Greece is calculated in two different ways, depending on the registration date of the vehicle:

  • By engine capacity (cc) for cars registered before 2010, and
  • By CO₂ emissions for newer cars registered after 2010.

Below are the main calculation tables:

Cars Registered from 1.1.2021 Onwards

CO₂ Emissions (g/km) € per g/km
0–122 0€
123–139 0.64€
140–166 0.70€
167–208 0.85€
209–224 1.87€
225–240 2.20€
241–260 2.50€
261–280 2.70€
281+ 2.85€

3001–4000 1150€
4001+ 1380€

Late Payment Penalties

For 2026, late payment will come with progressive penalties. Starting January 1, 2026, the following surcharges apply:

  • +25% of the total if paid within January
  • +50% if paid within February
  • +100% if paid from March onward

Who Is Exempt from Road Tax?

Not all drivers are required to pay road tax. Exemptions include:

  • Drivers with disabilities (PWD): Certain disability categories qualify for full exemption. Guardians of such individuals are also eligible for the same exemption for one vehicle.
  • Electric vehicles: Fully exempt due to zero emissions.
  • Hybrid cars: May pay a reduced or zero amount depending on CO₂ emissions. For example, a 2024 Toyota Yaris Hybrid emitting 87g/km pays nothing since it’s below the 122g/km threshold.
  • Drivers declaring vehicle immobilization: Those who officially register their vehicle as inactive before the deadline are exempt from paying.

How to Declare Vehicle Immobilization (License Plate Surrender)

Declaring immobilization has become much easier — no need for a physical visit anymore. Simply log in to the myCAR platform and select:

Digital Immobilization/Circulation > Vehicle Immobilization Declaration.

You’ll need to declare the exact address where your car is parked, which must be off public roads (private or rented parking space). From January 1st, you must remove your license plates yourself, and the vehicle cannot be moved afterward.
